Kevin Eubanks has decided to make a change.

After 18 years of being the butt of Jay’s jokes Jay’s bandleader and sidekick, he has decided to leave to pursue other music interests.

On his Twitter page, he has changed his status to “former bandleader of The Tonight Show“.

What’s weird is that NBC issued a statement saying that while Eubanks is indeed pursuing other opportunities, he WILL be back for the first Tonight Show with Jay Leno 2.0 on March 1st.  Do they think Eubanks will have enough time to try other things in 13 days?!

What MIGHT happen is he does in fact appear on March 1st, only to have an official sendoff.

So who will be replacing him?  If sources are correct, it will be Hootie Darius Rucker.

Then again, for all we know, Jay wanted that job – so NBC paid him off to leave too.

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself (I blame that on Nikki Finke’s hilarious/snarky influence) …

Ellen got some great news last week:

BURBANK, Calif. (February 10, 2010) – Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution (WBDTD) has renewed Telepictures ProductionsEmmy® Award–winning talk program The Ellen DeGeneres Show for three additional seasons on the owned-and-operated television stations of the NBC Local Media Division. The joint announcement was made today by Ken Werner, President, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, and John Wallace, President, NBC Local Media Division.

This will keep her show on through 2014.  The timing isn’t very surprising since her American Idol debut (on the first episode of the Hollywood editions) saw the show’s ratings increase by 10% over the same edition last year.  The show saw its biggest viewership this season since the premiere.

This move is VERY smart on NBC’s part. They are in a great position to take over that #1 spot (and keep it) once Oprah switches to her cable channel (OWN).  And Ellen is a great & strong personality that really has no competition.

The CW announced today that four of their current programs will be back in the fall for another season:

Vampire Diaries – The freshman hit that is the network’s most-watched show in households (averaging 4.6 million viewers) and adults 18-34 (2.5 rating).

Gossip GirlThe CW‘s #1 show in their target demo (W18-34).

America’s Next Top Model – Their long-running reality competition.  They will continue to run two cycles each year; one in the fall (cycle 15), one in the spring (cycle 16).
